We know wearing them can be irritating – the most enjoyable running is, after all, the light and unencumbered kind. We can’t change the weather (especially the Polish one, painfully capricious), but we can suggest which men’s running jackets to choose so that they are light, durable, and protect you from what they should protect you from.

Men’s running jackets – how to choose?

We won’t try to be know-it-alls; we’ll present a few specifics that – in our opinion – are worth keeping in mind when buying a running jacket.

• Breathability and ventilation: the material the jacket is made from should be breathable to allow the skin to release excess moisture and maintain the right body temperature. Additional ventilation panels or openings under the arms increase thermal comfort.
• Windproofing and waterproofing: the jacket should provide protection from wind and rain – really, you don’t have to stop training when the rain starts pouring; a good jacket will handle it.
• Weight and construction: the jacket should be lightweight and easy to pack so it can be carried easily or stowed in a backpack when running in changeable weather.
• Reflective elements, reflective elements, and once again safety: we’ll defend these with hands and feet! Reflective sections of the jacket or clearly contrasting details will increase visibility during training in poor lighting conditions.
• Flexibility and freedom of movement: the jacket should provide these, but that’s obvious, right?
• Adjustable sleeve length and waist: thanks to these you can fit the jacket to your silhouette – and no, it’s not only about comfort, but also thermal comfort.
• Zip or Velcro-secured pockets: they guarantee safe storage of small items (keys, phone, cards).
• Elastic cuffs: cuffs made of elastic material will help maintain thermal comfort and protect against the wind.

Winter running jackets

Running in winter is more difficult not only because of the weather conditions; it’s also harder to choose gear that will ensure safety and enjoyment from sport. This also applies (unfortunately) to jackets. So how do you choose the right men’s running jackets for winter?

For frosty but dry winter training sessions (i.e. without falling snow or rain) we recommend – in addition to thermal underwear and a sweatshirt – an insulated gilet. It will protect the area most exposed to cooling (chest: heart, lungs, kidneys) while still leaving ventilation for the armpits and shoulders.

Training in rain or snow requires taking a jacket with a membrane. Remember, however, to choose breathable models – preferably with special modules made of breathable mesh.

Men’s waterproof running jacket

This one is simple! The jacket must not let rain through (can you imagine running in a heavy fabric that has soaked up water?), it must be lightweight, wind-resistant, but also highly breathable – this last criterion is important in all types of running jackets. A hood will also come in handy, but for it to do its job properly, it must have drawcords or otherwise an adjustable circumference. And reflective elements – remember reflective elements!

Men’s windproof running jacket

As with the previous topics, we recommend a lightweight jacket with good wind insulation but also breathable – yes, such models exist! When running in strong wind, a hood is useful, but only if it can be properly secured and won’t flip in every direction (the best are those sewn into the collar or roll-away and secured with Velcro). If you decide to swap the hood for a close-fitting hat or a neck gaiter, go for a jacket with a high collar (it will protect the nape and neck).
