Sleeveless top for running

In theory, a running gilet and a sleeveless top for running are two different products. A sleeveless top usually serves as an outer layer of clothing, especially when we dress in layers for a jog. It can be lighter – waterproof and windproof, or more substantial – thick, quilted, intended for the coldest days. Under a sleeveless top we wear a longsleeve or a sweatshirt, and if it is very cold, the so-called base layer is also recommended.

A running gilet, on the other hand, is a product intended for warmer days. It is meant to make training easier in full sun, but also in rain or in open, windy spaces. It is often equipped with functional pockets for a water bottle or phone, so we can dispense with a running belt.

In practice, however, this distinction is rarely used, and the terms “sleeveless top for running” and “running gilet” are used interchangeably.

A running sleeveless top for any weather

A running gilet is meant to make training easier regardless of weather conditions. Of course, this means we must choose a product appropriate to the weather. Let's start with summer gilets, adapted for jogging in hot weather.

A summer running sleeveless top has a very light and breathable structure. It allows you to take water, an energy bar and other small items without having to carry a backpack – because even the most ergonomic backpack affects running comfort, and in the case of races it can even affect your placing. A summer running gilet provides adequate ventilation while protecting the back and chest from UV radiation. Unlike a warmer sleeveless top, under a summer sleeveless top or top we do not wear other items of clothing.

Running gilet – warmth and comfort

Let's move to the opposite side of the calendar. A winter running gilet is meant to protect us primarily from the cold. To do so, it must feature perfect ventilation and very effective moisture wicking to the outside. Why? Because on the coldest days, more than low temperatures, what threatens us is sweat lingering on the skin. If we sweat first and then get chilled by the wind – illness is almost certain, not to mention chafing, which is easy to get when running sweaty – sweat contains microscopic salt crystals that rub against the skin with every movement.

A gilet for transitional periods has a lighter formula. Its main task is to protect the upper part of our body from gusts of wind and from rain. It is therefore often made of a waterproof material that additionally blocks the wind. It provides thermal comfort, protecting the back, chest and stomach, but without overheating or restricting the shoulders.
