A cycling gilet comes in handy for a cyclist at any time of year. In winter it protects against the cold; in the transitional seasons it shields against sudden gusts of wind and getting soaked in light rain; in summer it protects sensitive parts of the body from excessive exposure to UV radiation. That’s why gilets for cyclists can be found in the range of most sportswear shops. Bear in mind, however, that not all gilets are created equal – whether a cycling gilet does its job depends on the quality of the fabric, the care taken in construction, and the inclusion of features that are useful on less and more demanding rides. We can guarantee that a cycling gilet from ATTIQ will perform flawlessly. Where does this confidence come from? Because we ourselves are passionate cyclists, and we carry out the first tests of the garments we sew on our own skin! See what cycling gilets we offer.
From the user’s point of view, a sleeveless jacket and a gilet are simply two terms referring to the same product. In theory, however, there is a difference between them, mainly concerning the thickness of the garment and whether we wear it over something else or directly on the skin. According to the official definition, a sleeveless jacket for cycling is outerwear. Under it, we wear a longsleeve top or a sweatshirt. A sleeveless jacket is most often thicker, and can even be quilted. It is therefore easy to guess that we use it mainly in the colder months.
A cycling gilet looks similar, but is usually much thinner. We put it on when it gets warm and we are looking for sportswear in which we won’t sweat, while still being practical and functional. Understood in this way, a gilet for cyclists is therefore mainly a product for summer and spring.
In reality, few people worry about these somewhat artificial divisions, especially since some products would be genuinely hard to classify into one group or the other. In our range, for example, we have ultralight cycling gilets that at the same time protect well against wind and rain.
How do you choose a cycling sleeveless jacket appropriate to the weather conditions? First and foremost, you need to think about what you expect from such a product. Depending on the season, the answer will be different.
In summer, heat is what troubles us most. It can be accompanied by intense UV radiation (when the sun isn’t hiding behind clouds but beats down without mercy), as well as high air humidity (we will recognise it by clothes sticking to the body and physical effort becoming particularly difficult). The role of a cycling gilet in such conditions is to provide excellent ventilation and equally effective wicking of sweat to the outside – so that salt crystals accumulated on the skin do not cause irritation. It is also worth choosing a model that has, for example, a built-in convenient pocket for a bottle or a phone.
In the cooler months, the requirements placed on cycling sleeveless jackets change dramatically. Now we primarily care about keeping the chest and back warm. The task is difficult – the body takes the impact of air driven by speed, which can be really cold. In such a situation, a solid windproof cycling gilet is a godsend. Ideally, it should also be able to protect against light rain.
For fans of winter riding on two wheels, there are quilted cycling gilets capable of fending off attacks of frost (although it’s worth considering whether, in such weather, it wouldn’t be better to opt for a jacket instead).
ATTIQ cycling gilets are products we focus on at every stage of their creation. We design them with flair but also with good sense, and then sew them carefully from the highest-quality materials. We don’t forget useful details – pockets, reflectives, a secure YKK zip.
Choose the women’s or men’s version of the cycling gilet and the right size, and we guarantee it will become a constant companion on your cycling trips.
